Short Song Description:
Long Song Description:
Bruce's vision of redemption, healing and enlightenment leading from his Vioxx-induced congestive heart failure to his swimming recovery was foreseen and fulfilled in Santa Cruz, California in 2006. See the bio and photo pages.

Bruce placed a close second in the 50 meter backstroke at the 2006 Pacific regional masters swimming championships at UC Santa Cruz in July, then went on that summer to place 8th in the United States and 13th in the world at the 2006 FINA World Championships in masters swimming at Stanford University; post-congestive heart failure. Bruce was disappointed because he missed top 10 in the world bragging rights by a couple tenths of a second.

Ten weeks before the World Championships, Bruce was still in a sick bed with daily chest pain and swelling in his extremities. But he had a dream, he fired up his Spiral Violet 1, jumped in the water and decided to go for it!

"I considered what could be done, and came to the conclusion that I alone must swim across the channel to fetch the Grail."

-C.G. Jung, His Myth in Our Time (Von Franz)
Story Behind the Song:
Since 2006, Bruce has placed in the top 10 in the nation in the 50 backstroke at every U.S. masters swimming championship he has competed in. In 2009, Bruce placed 8th at the short course nationals in Fresno, where his ordeal and healing took place, and 10th at the long course nationals in Indianapolis, on the campus of the Indiana University School of Medicine where he had his original visions in association with Ryan White, and built the first prototype of the Spiral Violet 1 in 1990.

I sent this message in a bottle,
The water cast it on the sea,
The tide arose seven years later,
The fates had sent it back to me,

I never really doubted I would see the vision through,
My mind was merely clouded with the fear that others knew,
For when I looked within myself the truth was always there,
Your love was here to guide me 'til my wings took to the air,

In Santa Cruz,

Out on the sea the final hour,
I saw the message coming home,
And though I thought I'd die here waiting,
I knew I'd never be alone,

Then when the lightning struck a blinding bolt upon the beach,
Beyond all of the guiding dreams my aching heart could reach,
The power coursing through my heart restored my wasted veins,
Nothing of the former pain nor agony remains,

In Santa Cruz,

Now let this be a lasting lesson,
For those who cross the water blind,
When all seems lost your spirit drowning,
The tide restores your life in time,

So when your fear is casting wicked waves upon the sea,
I'll be on the water if you listen close to me,
Take my hand love rising is the message you will find,
Then we'll walk across the sea enlightening the blind,

In Santa Cruz...
